Students actually make a hologram in this workshop. The theory of Holography has evolved from four Nobel prizes in complex physics yet the making of a hologram is a hands-on process that anyone can master. Interestingly enough many theoreticians who have spent large parts of their professional lives studying the math and physics of this subject do not know how to make a hologram. By the end of this workshop students will have made one they can take home. Kelly is an Evanston photographer whose work has been published world wide. He studied holography under Dr. Tung Hon Jeong, a physicist internationally recognized for his work in holography. (Note: The lasers we will use to create these three dimensional images are no more powerful than those that read the bar codes in the grocery store checkout counter and are certified to be entirely safe. ) Students will need to bring with them a few small objects in a size range from a dime to a small bunch of keys as subjects for these holographic cameos. More artistic subjects in the same size range may be made in advance from rigid material such hardened play dough or clay. Single-Session Workshop For date

| The Art of Photography | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This
is a "hands-on" course for persons who want to move
their photography, digital or film, toward fine art. By "Hands
on" I mean that the basic format of the course will be
for students to take pictures during and between, sessions
and bring them for discussion at the following session. Class
size will be a maximum of seven. The first session will also include a discussion of the student photographer's artistic objectives. Shooting assignments and critiques during the course will include lighting and composition in dealing with both human and scenic material. The students will complete the workshop with a better understanding of camera, lighting, composition, and reaching their photographic objective. A small portfolio of their own work accomplished during the course as well as notes will serve as a text and guide for continuing work.

| Camera As Hammer | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are two basic forms of photography that usually overlap. One is the photograph purely as a self contained artistic object. The other is is photography as a descriptive language used to tell a story or record a scene. Photography in its most direct and literal form can be a powerful language to make a point or achieve specific ends. This kind of photography achieves even greater power when its literal images are expressed in powerful artistic forms. However, even at their most prosaic, photographs are powerful communications. They are hard to argue with. "Camera as Hammer" is a course in taking photos for an external purpose. In this course you will learn how to be a photojournalist with a camera and a cause. Take photos to inform your city council of your neighborhoodıs needs. Celebrate with your photographs the unsung heroes who do good work in your neighborhood or town. Use your photos to focus attention on threats to your city or townıs environment. Create photos for your articles and press releases that an editor canıt turn down. Explain the benefits of your organization to your commnity- or to the world. Expose waste and ineficiency in your government.
You will need a camera for this course. Students will assume film and processing costs.
